What Is Tafseer? A Beginner's Guide and the Best Tafseer Books

Tafseer (also spelled tafsir) means explanation. In the context of the Quran, a tafseer is a book that explains the meaning of the verses. It goes further than a translation. A translation tells you what the words say. A tafseer tells you what the verse means, why it was revealed, how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions understood it, and how scholars have explained it since.

If you already read a translation and often think "but what does this verse really mean", a tafseer is your next step. This guide explains what a tafseer contains, how the main ones differ, and which to start with.

What a tafseer usually includes

  • The verse and its translation.
  • The reason for revelation (sabab al-nuzul) where it is known, meaning the event or question that a verse was sent down about.
  • Explanation of difficult words and phrases.
  • Related verses and hadith that explain the same subject.
  • The views of earlier scholars, especially the companions and the generations after them.
  • Lessons and rulings that scholars draw from the verse.

A short tafseer gives a paragraph per verse. A large tafseer can give several pages.

How tafseer differs from translation

| | Translation (tarjuma) | Tafseer | | --- | --- | --- | | Goal | Give the meaning of the words | Explain the meaning, context and lessons | | Length | One line per verse | A paragraph to several pages per verse | | Good for | Daily reading, understanding the message | Study, teaching, answering "why" and "how" |

The main styles of tafseer

Tafseer by narration (tafsir bil-ma'thur)

This style explains the Quran using other verses, hadith, and the statements of the companions and early scholars. Tafsir Ibn Kathir is the best known example. It is trusted because it stays close to the sources.

Tafseer with reflection and reasoning (tafsir bil-ra'y within limits)

This style still uses the sources but adds more of the author's own explanation, language analysis, and discussion of how a verse applies today. Maariful Quran and Tafheem ul Quran are in this group.

Short, teaching focused tafseer

These are written for ordinary readers. They keep notes brief and practical. Tafseer Ahsan ul Bayan and Tafseer Ahsan ul Kalam are common examples in the subcontinent.

Scholars sometimes differ on points of explanation, especially where a hadith has more than one grading or where a verse has more than one accepted meaning. A good tafseer notes these differences rather than hiding them. When a point matters to your practice, check with a qualified teacher.

Which tafseer should you start with?

If you read Urdu and want a clear first tafseer

Tafseer Ahsan ul Bayan is an easy to understand Urdu Quran commentary. According to the product listing, this edition has been distributed by the Saudi government to pilgrims, which reflects how widely it is used as a simple reference. Tafseer Ahsan ul Kalam presents the Quran in bold script with an Urdu translation and short footnote tafsir summarised from classical works such as Ibn Kathir and Qurtubi. Either is a strong starting point.

If you read Urdu and want depth

Maariful Quran by Mufti Muhammad Shafi is one of the most widely used detailed Urdu tafseers. Babussalam stocks a premium 8 volume Urdu set. It explains verses fully and discusses how rulings are derived, which makes it a lifetime reference for a home. Tafheem ul Quran by Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi is another detailed Urdu tafseer, known for connecting verses to modern life; a simple edition is available. Tafsir Ibn Kathir in Urdu (5 volume set) gives you the classic narration based tafseer in translation.

If you read English

Tafsir Ibn Kathir is available as a 10 volume English set for readers who want the classic work in full. For a lighter option, the Interpretation of the Meanings of the Noble Quran is a complete English translation with short explanatory notes, suitable as a first English study copy.

If you follow the method of the early scholars closely

Tafsir As-Sadi by Shaikh Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di is valued for being clear and direct while staying close to the wording of the verse. Babussalam stocks it in parts, so you can start with the first three juz.

A study order that works

  1. Read a plain translation of the Quran once, cover to cover, to get the whole picture. See Article 1.
  2. Add a short tafseer (Ahsan ul Bayan or Ahsan ul Kalam) and read the notes as you go.
  3. When a topic interests you, look it up in a detailed tafseer (Maariful Quran, Ibn Kathir, Tafheem ul Quran).
  4. To understand the Arabic itself, begin basic Quranic Arabic. See how to learn Arabic to understand the Quran.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does tafseer mean?

Tafseer means explanation. A tafseer of the Quran is a book that explains the meaning, background and lessons of the verses, going beyond a word for word translation.

Is Maariful Quran good for beginners?

It is detailed rather than short, so a complete beginner may find it heavy as a first read. Many people start with a short tafseer such as Ahsan ul Bayan, then use Maariful Quran as a reference for topics they want to study more.

What is the most authentic tafseer?

Scholars widely respect Tafsir Ibn Kathir because it explains the Quran using other verses, hadith and the statements of the early scholars. No single book is free of every point of discussion, so students often read more than one.

Can I read tafseer without knowing Arabic?

Yes. Urdu and English tafseers are written for readers who do not know Arabic. Learning some Arabic later will deepen your understanding.

How long does it take to read a full tafseer?

A short tafseer can be read alongside the Quran over a few months. A large multi volume tafseer is usually used over years, a topic or a surah at a time.

Should I finish a translation before starting tafseer?

It helps to read a translation once first so you know the overall message. After that, reading a short tafseer alongside your daily recitation works well.
